Radiation Basics
Radiation Techniques
Maximum Tolerated Radiation Doses to Various Organs

Measuring Radiation absorption
Gray: The basic unit of radiation absorbed dose in joules per mass(Joules/kg).
1 Gy =100 rads
1 rad= 1 cGy

_______________________________________________________________

Tolerant Doses of Radiation
TD 5/5- The minimum tolerance dose
TD 50/5- The maximum tolerance dose
They refer to severe complication rate of 5 & 50% within 5 years of radiotherapy completion.

The values below are approximate & for learning purposes only!
Breast:TD50/5 3/3
Rectum:TD50/5 3/3 8000
Liver:TD50/5 3/3 4000
Testicles:TD50/5 3/3 2000
Colon:TD50/5 3/3 5500
Kidney: TD50/5 3/3 2800
Bladder: TD50/5 3/3 8000
Brain: TD50/5 3/3 6000
Lung: TD50/5 3/3 2450

Radiation Therapy: Standard Doses Given to Various Organs

ANAL
Primary XRT: 45-75 Gy
concurrent: 30 Gy over 3 weeks in one study; 45-57 Gy used in other studies (given with 5FU+mitomycin)
RECTUM
Concurrent: 45-55 Gy & 540 cGy boost to the tumor bed, the nodes & 2cm adjacent tissues. A second boost 360 cGy given to some patients as well.
